Can you imagine living over 100 feet up in the trees? A people known as the Korowai tribe of Popua, Indonesia don't need to stretch their imagination at all because their lives have always been spent living in tree houses that soar high above.
On the island of New Guinea in the southeastern part of Papua, the isolated tribe is the only group of people in the world that have established their primary residence in wooden treehouses.
Their location or home is totally densely forested and mountainous.
They are the fantastic architects of towering tree homes built using stone
tools as high as 114 feet above the ground! The first contacted of this wildest
tribe, Korowai by Dutch missionaries in the 1970s.
This is how Korowai's men wear all the time. |
The Korowai tribe believes
that the entire world would be destroyed by an earthquake if they ever changed
their customs. The “Earthquake” that they "swear" will happen if they
ever put on pants as they never wear anything. Meanwhile, the women use only a
small skirt made from tree skin and Sago fibres. The men use only a leaf around
the penis.
The Khakhua
The Korowai tribe is one of
the tribe that practicing cannibalism which means it’s the revenge consumption
of a demon that has taken the skin of a human and eaten another and they call
the demon as The Khakhua.
Despite everything, the
weaknesses of the Korowai have a lack in modern medicines and their jungle
environment means they are commonly exposed to diseases like malaria and
tuberculosis. Last but not least, they are people who never knew a world
existed outside their jungle besides themselves till they are founded by the
outsiders.
